Within the ambit of the Portuguese presidency of the European Union's Council, the first Euromed ministerial meeting on migrations will take place in Albufeira, Algarve, on 18 and 19 November.
This ministerial meeting will discuss migrations in the Euro-Mediterranean context, more specifically migration and development (remittances and microcredit), legal immigration (opportunities) and illegal immigration.
The fact that the meeting is to be held in this region of Portugal is a sign of the will of the Portuguese presidency to promote dialogue and cooperation among our countries. Algarve has been, throughout history, a place for social gatherings, a place of influence and a link between the European and Mediterranean cultures.
We believe that here, a place where cultures meet, the delegations' concentrated effort will arrive at a very significant collection of actions that will bring about the formulation of solid and shared measures in the area of migrations. These measures will have a guaranteed impact on the life of citizens and on the development of partnership relations between the two shores of the Mediterranean.
