Within the Socialist Party, was President of the District Federation of Castelo Branco from 1986 to 1995; spokesperson for the environment from 1991 to 1995; member, since 1991, of the National Secretariat and of the Political Commission 
Member of Parliament for the Castelo Branco electoral district since 1987
Was vice-president of the Socialist Party parliamentary fraction between 2002 and 2005
Before engaging in politics worked as a technical engineer at the Covilhã Municipal Council from 1981to 1987
