Born on 6th September 1957 in Vilar de Maçada, Alijó, district of Vila Real Divorced, two children Civil Engineering graduate and MBA Prime-Minister of the XVII Constitutional Government since 12th March 2006 Elected Secretary-General of the Socialist Party in September 2004 Had previously been member of Government: Secretary of State and Deputy to the Minister of the Environment from 1995 to 1997, Minister Assistant to the Prime Minister from 1997 to 1999 and Minister for Environment and Territorial Planning from 1999 to 2002 Within the Socialist Party, was President of the District Federation of Castelo Branco from 1986 to 1995; spokesperson for the environment from 1991 to 1995; member, since 1991, of the National Secretariat and of the Political Commission Member of Parliament for the Castelo Branco electoral district since 1987 Was vice-president of the Socialist Party parliamentary fraction between 2002 and 2005 Before engaging in politics worked as a technical engineer at the Covilhã Municipal Council from 1981to 1987
